Emperor Franz I’s momentous meeting echoes through these stones. Brandýs nad Labem Castle stands before us. It is a testament to Bohemian Renaissance history. For over 500 years Habsburg dynasties resided here.
Brandýs nad Labem Castle started as a Gothic castle in the 14th century. In 1547 it became property of the Czech monarchy. Emperor Ferdinand I brought prominent artists. They decorated the castle with magnificent graffiti.
By 1581 Brandýs nad Labem Castle was a royal city. It became Emperor Rudolf II’s summer residence. He loved strolling through the gardens. He often held parties. Famous astronomer Tycho de Brahe was among his friends.
Emperor Charles VI used it as a hunting castle. Maria Theresa even met her husband here. From here she went to Prague for her royal coronation.
During the Napoleonic Wars Emperor Franz I established headquarters here. In 1813 Tsar Alexander I and King Friedrich Wilhelm III met him. They planned a coalition against Napoleon. This led to victory in the Battle of Leipzig.
Karl I was the last owner until 1918. He was the Austro-Hungarian emperor and Czech king. As a young officer he stayed here. In 1911 he brought his wife Empress Zeta from Parma.
The state nationalized Brandýs nad Labem Castle in 1918. In 1995 the municipality of Brandýs nad Labem took over. Massive renovations followed.
Today Brandýs nad Labem Castle serves as the city’s center. Official ceremonies are held in the banquet hall. These include weddings and award ceremonies. Two impressive gardens surround the castle. They attract many visitors.
Emperor Ferdinand I loved hunting here. It was a typical summer and hunting seat near Prague. Saint Wenceslas is connected to the Palladium of the Czech lands. Emperors connected with both traditions. They were Austrian emperors and Czech kings.
Rudolph II’s rule was the most important time for Brandýs nad Labem Castle. He often used the castle and forests. The garden was famous and one of the best in Europe. The Thirty Years War destroyed the buildings and garden. Only a few authentic documents remain.
Emperor Charles VI continued to hunt here. Maria Theresa visited with her father. In 1723 she met her future husband. This happened before Charles’s coronation as Czech King in Prague.

Charles I was the last emperor to own Brandýs nad Labem Castle. After World War I the chateau housed companies and flats. It was used for workshops. In 1995 the municipality took possession.
