Ever wondered how Budapest connects to Esztergom? That connection is Z72. The Z72 is a suburban train. It travels between Budapest-Nyugati station and Esztergom.

The Z72 offers a quick escape from the city. It began its journey on May 20 2018. This was when the new Budapest-Esztergom railway line timetable was introduced.

Initially, the Z72 only stopped at major stations. These included Újpest, Aquincum, Solymár and Pilisvörösvár. It also stopped at Szabadságliget and Klotildliget. This was only up to Piliscsaba.

In December 2019, the Z72 schedule changed. The train’s stopping pattern varied on weekdays and weekends. The original stopping pattern applied to weekends. On weekdays, the Z72 added Angyalföld to its stops. It also stopped at the stations between Budapest and Piliscsaba. Magdolnavölgy was skipped on weekdays but served on weekends. During peak hours some Z72 trains stop at Aranyvölgy and Magdolnavölgy. Szabadságliget and Klotildliget are weekend-only stops. Angyalföld and Aranyvölgy are weekday-only stops for the Z72.

The Z72 trains are made of blue and yellow Stadler FLIRT units. These were introduced between 2014 and 2015. Stadler KISS trains also operate on weekdays. Weekends are exclusively served by FLIRT trains.

December 11 2022 marked a change for the Z72. It integrated with the G72 express train. The Z72 now runs every half hour. It follows the same schedule on weekdays and weekends.

The Z72 stops only at Újpest, Aquincum and Solymár before Pilisvörösvár. From Pilisvörösvár to Esztergom, it generally stops everywhere. Off-peak trains alternate skipping Magdolnavölgy and Piliscsév.

The Z72 operates on a fixed schedule. It departs and arrives at each station at the same minute every hour. The Z72 connects Budapest-Nyugati to Esztergom. Stops include Újpest, Aquincum and Solymár. The train also calls at Pilisvörösvár, Szabadságliget and Klotildliget. Other stops are Piliscsaba, Magdolnavölgy and Pilisjászfalu. The Z72 continues to Piliscsév, Leányvár and Dorog. It finally reaches Esztergom-Kertváros and Esztergom.

The Z72 is more than a train. It is a vital link. It connects communities and provides access to the beauty of the region. As you stand here remember the Z72. Think of the journeys made and the people connected by this train.
