Have you ever wondered where French kings held court? It’s in Yvelines. I want to share its story. Yvelines is more than just a department. It’s a showcase of France’s rich history.

Yvelines sits in the western part of the Île-de-France region. It proudly displays architectural and natural wonders. The Palace of Versailles is here. Its sprawling estate captivates everyone. Thoiry Zoo offers a different kind of wonder. It is only a few kilometers from Paris.

Yvelines came to be on January 1 1968. It was created from the western part of Seine-et-Oise. A law passed in 1964 made it happen. Yvelines inherited Seine-et-Oise’s official number, 78. It took the largest portion of its territory. Versailles became its prefecture.

The name Yvelines comes from the Forest of Yveline. This forest is next to Rambouillet. In 1969, Yvelines gained Châteaufort and Toussus-le-Noble. These communes came from Essonne.

Versailles, Yvelines’ departmental capital, holds a special place in French history. Louis XIV’s château is its heart. For over a century, it was the French capital. This era was under the Ancien Régime. Versailles served again as capital between 1871 and 1879. This was during the early years of the Third Republic. The French Parliament still meets at the château. They gather in congressional sittings. They enact constitutional changes. They listen to formal declarations by the President.

Yvelines is bordered by several departments. Val-d’Oise is to the north. Hauts-de-Seine is to the east. Essonne lies to the southeast. Eure-et-Loir is to the southwest. Eure is to the west.

The eastern and northern parts of Yvelines belong to the Paris metropolitan area. But much of Yvelines is rural. The Forest of Rambouillet covers a lot of it. This forest is also known as the Forest of Yveline. Two regional parks add to Yvelines’ natural beauty. These are Haute Vallée de Chevreuse Regional Natural Park and part of Vexin Français Park. Golf enthusiasts know Yvelines for La Tuilerie-Bignon. It is one of France’s best-known golf courses. You can find it in Saint-Nom-la-Bretèche.

Versailles is the most populous commune in Yvelines. Other important cities include Mantes-la-Jolie, Rambouillet and Saint-Germain-en-Laye.

Yvelines offers palaces and châteaux. Versailles is the most famous. Others include the Château de Breteuil and the Château de Rambouillet. Museums abound in Yvelines. The Museum of National Antiques is in Saint-Germain-en-Laye. Poissy has a Toy Museum.

Several artists’ and writers’ houses are open to visitors. Maurice Denis’s house is now a museum. Alexandre Dumas’s Château de Monte-Cristo is in Port-Marly. Maurice Ravel’s house is also a museum.

Parks and gardens offer peaceful retreats. The Chèvreloup Arboretum is in Rocquencourt. The King’s Vegetable Garden thrives in Versailles.

Yvelines often supports centre-right political candidates. However, Michel Rocard was an MP for the department. He was in the Socialist Party. He served as Prime Minister under President François Mitterrand.

So, as we stand here, remember that Yvelines is a tapestry. It is woven with royal history, natural beauty and cultural richness. It is a region that continues to shape France’s identity.
