The Youth Advancement Monument was a gift from Pertamina to the city of Jakarta. It was presented in 1971 to celebrate Jakarta’s 445th anniversary. The statue’s design, showing a near-naked young man with straining muscles, is meant to inspire participation in nation-building. The flame he holds symbolizes the light of the future, carried forward by the youth. The name itself, “Pemuda Membangun” or Youth Advancement, reinforces this message of hope and progress.
The monument was designed by a team of sculptors known as Biro Insinyur Seniman Arsitektur, led by Imam Supardi. Construction began in July 1971 and was intended to be finished by Youth Pledge Day that year, October 28th. However, the project faced delays and wasn’t completed until March 1972. The statue’s creation is a testament to the dedication and vision of its creators. It is made of steel-framed concrete and covered with a terrazzo layer, standing tall at 25 meters.
The Youth Advancement Monument has even earned some humorous nicknames. English speakers sometimes call it “Pizza Man” or “Hot-Hands Harry” because of the plate held aloft. Some Indonesians jokingly refer to it as “Aduh, Panas,” meaning “Ouch, Hot!” Another nickname is simply “Pertamina,” referencing the oil company that donated it. These nicknames, while lighthearted, demonstrate the statue’s presence in the public consciousness. Interestingly, the monument stands at a key transition point for Jakarta’s Mass Rapid Transit system. It marks the shift from the elevated to the underground section. During the MRT’s construction, a temporary steel frame was built to protect the statue while a tunnel was dug beneath it.
