Did you know that Oprah Winfrey once graced the graduation ceremony of Young Women’s Leadership Charter School? This isn’t just any school. The Young Women’s Leadership Charter School of Chicago was a beacon of opportunity for young women on the city’s South Side. It opened in August 2000. Its mission was bold: to provide a college preparatory education with a focus on math science and technology. These fields often lack female representation.
The school’s founders were driven by a vision. They wanted to empower young women from disadvantaged backgrounds. The founders drew inspiration from the Young Women’s Leadership School of East Harlem. YWLCS wasn’t simply about academics. It fostered self-confidence and challenged its students to achieve their full potential. The school used a lottery system for admission. This ensured diversity among its nearly 350 students. It was Chicago’s only public all-girls school.
Initially located on the Illinois Institute of Technology campus YWLCS eventually moved to its own building. The first graduating class in 2004 was addressed by Oprah herself. Michelle Obama followed as a commencement speaker in 2005. These high-profile speakers highlighted the school’s success and the importance of its mission. The school’s innovative curriculum and dedicated faculty were key to its success. The unique learning environment helped bridge the gap between adolescence and college.
The school achieved remarkable results. Its graduation and college placement rates were consistently high. For instance the 2004 graduating class saw 97% of its students entering college. This success was further recognized by the Chicago Public Schools. YWLCS was rated number one in 5-year graduation rate and college enrollment among non-selective CPS high schools. The school also boasted high percentages of students enrolling in post-secondary education. Many students went on to prestigious colleges and universities. The school even produced Gates Millennium Scholars for two consecutive years. These scholars received significant financial aid from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
Sadly Young Women’s Leadership Charter School closed in June 2019. This closure was due to declining enrollment and financial difficulties. However its legacy remains a testament to the power of education and its potential to transform lives. It reminds us of the importance of supporting initiatives that empower young women and encourage their pursuit of excellence in STEM fields.
