Two YMCA presidents helped start youth movements. Mr F C Sands founded the local Boy Scouts. Mr James M Fraser founded the Boys’ Brigade.
The YMCA pioneered commercial studies classes. By 1913, courses included architecture and electrical engineering. In the late 1970s, the government banned discos. They were linked to drugs. The YMCA worked with authorities to reopen a disco. YMCA volunteers provided supervision. It was an affordable and safe place for youth.
In the 1980s, the YMCA set up Singapore’s first Social Service Centre. It partnered with the Anglican Church. The YMCA supports families by providing developmental services.

The YMCA building has its own history. The YMCA was officially established on 30 June 1903. It was first located at Nos 1 and 2 Armenian Street. In 1911, the YMCA moved to its new Orchard Road. During the Japanese Occupation, the Kempeitai used the YMCA building. It became their interrogation headquarters. War heroine Elizabeth Choy was tortured there. The YMCA reclaimed the building after the war. It reopened in December 1946. A new YMCA building opened on 24 November 1984.
The Young Women’s Christian Association is a sister organization of the YMCA. It caters to the interests and needs of women in Singapore.
