In 1921, a teacher named I.C. Lam saw a need. He noticed the Cantonese migrants around Yeung Ching School lacked a spiritual home. He felt compassion for these people who didn’t know Christ. Right here at Kum Yan Methodist Church, that compassion blossomed into a fellowship. Lam began reaching out to these migrants, sharing the Gospel. Kum Yan Methodist Church started not within these walls, but in the classrooms of Yeung Ching School. As the congregation grew, Sunday services began at the school. This small act of faith marked the humble beginnings of Kum Yan Methodist Church. The church’s mission from its inception has been outreach. This mission is woven into the very DNA of Kum Yan Methodist Church. Even during its 103rd-anniversary celebration in 2021, the church emphasized its commitment to serving the community. They unveiled a reset foundation stone from the original 1957 building on Queen Street. This stone symbolizes not just the church’s physical foundation, but also its unwavering foundation in Christ. Stories abound that highlight the church’s dedication to its people. One story tells of a hospitalized church leader whose first concern wasn’t her health, but the well-being of her congregation and Kum Yan Methodist Church. This spirit of selfless service continues to inspire members today. The church supports over 15 mission workers, both locally and internationally. From East Timor to Europe, the impact of Kum Yan Methodist Church is felt around the world. As you stand before Kum Yan Methodist Church, remember the teacher who saw a need and acted on it. His compassion laid the foundation for a church dedicated to outreach and service, a legacy that continues to thrive over a century later.
