Isn’t it amazing how a place of worship can be so much more than just bricks and mortar? The Young Israel of Skokie, right here before us, is a testament to that. Founded in 1994, the Young Israel of Skokie was born from the dreams of a small group of families. These families yearned for a synagogue that went beyond the conventional. They envisioned a place deeply rooted in the principles of Torah, avodah, and gemilus chassadim – a place where their children wouldn’t just observe faith but live it. Their journey began modestly, holding Shabbat services in rented spaces, their numbers slowly growing, their spirits ever high. From a single storefront to a full-fledged synagogue, the Young Israel of Skokie steadily blossomed, finally finding its permanent home here on East Prairie Road in 2014. What started as a Shabbat minyan now encompasses weekday morning prayers, summer Mincha/Maariv, and even a winter Maariv minyan. The arrival of Rabbi Gershon Eliezer Schaffel in 1996 ushered in a new era of learning, with numerous classes enriching the weekly schedule. But the Young Israel of Skokie is more than just rituals and scriptures; it’s a beacon of warmth and kinship. The congregation, known for its deep respect for prayer and tradition, opens its arms to everyone, creating a true sense of family. The Young Israel of Skokie stands as a testament to the enduring power of faith and community. As we continue our tour today, let’s carry with us the spirit of the Young Israel of Skokie, a spirit of growth, learning, and unwavering faith.
