Imagine yourself standing in front of York House, a grand building that’s seen centuries of history unfold. This Grade II listed structure, dating back to the 17th century, has been a witness to the rise and fall of dynasties and the transformation of Twickenham from a small village into a bustling town.

The earliest record of York House dates back to 1446, when it was called Yorke Farm. The farm was part of the Manor of Twickenham, with 43 acres of land and 77 acres of common land. It was leased by William Helder and Walter Bolder to William Yorke and his wife Agnes.

Over the years, York House has changed hands numerous times, from King Henry VIII to Queen Henrietta Maria. It has housed prominent figures like the Earl of Manchester and the Earl of Clarendon.

But perhaps the most intriguing story of York House involves the Duke of Buckingham, who owned the house in the 17th century. He was known for his extravagant lifestyle and amassed a large collection of art treasures.

During the Civil War, York House was sequestrated and later granted to Thomas, Lord Fairfax. The house then served as a residence for the second Duke of Buckingham, even though he was a Royalist who was out of favor with the Commonwealth.

After the Restoration, York House continued to be used for ceremonial occasions and was even hired by foreign ambassadors.

In 1906, York House was sold to Sir Ratan J Tata, an Indian merchant prince, who made extensive alterations and improvements. He moved the entrance to the center of the building and built a loggia at the end of the East wing.

In 1924, the property was purchased by Twickenham Urban District Council and in 1926, the house was opened by the Duke of York, the future King George VI.

Today, York House stands as a testament to the rich history and cultural heritage of Twickenham. It serves as the municipal offices for the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames.

As you stand in front of the house, you can almost hear the echoes of the past: the footsteps of royalty, the laughter of guests at grand balls, and the murmur of important decisions made within its walls. York House truly is a place where history comes alive.
