Through Yorgancilar Gate we journey. This isn’t just any gate. It’s Gate 11 a vital part of the Theodosian Walls. These walls protected Constantinople for over 1100 years. They withstood sieges from Goths Avars Russians Bulgars and Umayadds. Even the Ottomans attacked three times before finally breaching the defenses. Can you imagine the sounds the clashes the screams? The weight of history presses down here.

Theodosius II the emperor who commissioned these impressive walls also had a double set built. A moat lay between them. Guard towers stood every 170 feet. Yorgancilar Gate once stood proud. It was part of a complex system of defense. But the might of artillery eventually overwhelmed the strength of these magnificent walls. The city fell in 1453 to Mehmet the Conqueror.

After the conquest Mehmet built the Yedikule Fortress. It’s right beside Yorgancilar Gate. He walled it up. The fortress became a royal treasury and a prison. Foreign heads of state rebellious pashas and others met their end within its walls. It’s a sobering thought. This gate has witnessed both triumph and tragedy.

Over time the walls crumbled. The fortress was abandoned. Parts were taken down. In the 1980s Turkey began restoration. It continues today. Yorgancilar Gate along with much of the walls stands as a reminder of both power and decay. A testament to the city’s enduring spirit. The gate remains a silent observer of centuries passed.

Here we stand. Look closely. See the echoes of empires. Imagine the emperors and soldiers who passed through this very gate. They looked out on a world vastly different from our own. Their lives their hopes their fears all played out against this backdrop. Yorgancilar Gate a symbol of resilience a gateway to the past. Its story is far from over. It continues to stand guard. A silent witness to the ages.
