Can you imagine a place where history whispers through the centuries? Right here, in the heart of Antalya’s old town, stands the striking Yokuşbaşı Camii, a mosque that embodies the spirit of the Seljuk Empire.

Built in 1230, Yokuşbaşı Camii is a testament to the architectural prowess of the Seljuk Sultan Alaeddin Keykubad I. The mosque was a part of a larger complex, a külliye, that included a medrese (school), a dervish lodge, and other structures. The mosque itself features a unique six-domed prayer hall, making it one of the oldest examples of multi-dome construction in Anatolia. But it’s the minaret that truly stands out. The minaret, a tall, slender tower, was built in 1373 by the Hamids, a dynasty that inherited much of the Seljuk legacy. The minaret is known as the Yivli Minaret, or “Fluted Minaret,” due to its distinctive decoration: eight grooves or flutes that run the length of its shaft. The minaret was originally built with intricately carved stone, and it was later adorned with turquoise and cobalt blue glazed tiles, providing a vibrant splash of color against the backdrop of the old city.

As you stand before this magnificent structure, you can feel the presence of those who came before you, their prayers echoing down through the ages. Yokuşbaşı Camii is not just a mosque, it’s a living symbol of Antalya’s rich past, a bridge connecting the vibrant present to a time when the Seljuks ruled the land.
