Built between 1210 and 1219 Evdir Han stands as a testament to the Anatolian Seljuk Sultan Izzeddin Keykavus I. This magnificent caravanserai near Antalya is one of only two in Anatolia with an open courtyard and four main iwans. Imagine the bustling scene centuries ago. Merchants from across the Seljuk Empire rested here. Their camels laden with silks spices and precious goods. Evdir Han was a crucial stop along the trade route. It connected Antalya to Konya the empire’s heart. The han’s walls are cut stone. The upper levels are rubble. Porticoes surround the inner courtyard. They feature hewn stones and pointed arches. These arches are placed on thick cut stone pillars. Inside the cells opened directly onto these porticoes. The crown gate is a masterpiece. It is almost completely covered in geometric marble decorations. Evdir Han is mostly in ruins. However the northwest facade still stands tall. It proudly shows the skill of Seljuk artisans. The Doemealti Municipality and Akdeniz University’s Faculty of Fine Arts are working hard. They are restoring this historical gem. Their mission is to revitalize Evdir Han. They aim to host cultural events. They want to bring the inn back to life. They hope to open a museum. A museum within the han’s walls. Imagine exploring Evdir Han’s restored glory. Witnessing cultural events against its historical backdrop. This is more than a restoration project. It is a revival of a vital piece of Turkey’s history. A history waiting to be rediscovered.
