“Remember those old aircraft factories?” I ask. The YMCA Hawker Centre stands before us a testament to transformation. Originally an aircraft base this building has a fascinating history. For over 20 years it’s been a beloved community space. But its story goes much further back.

The YMCA Hawker Centre’s roots trace back to 1858. Reverend Lawrence Byrnes started weekly coffee meetings at Kingston Congregational Church. These were so popular that meetings continued every Wednesday. Prayer studies discussions and lectures were all part of the gatherings.

The YMCA’s early years weren’t without challenges. When Reverend Byrnes left the group faltered. A new association formed at Brick Lane Baptist Church. This group focused on practical community support. The YMCA Kingston began running evening classes in arithmetic reading writing and shorthand. They also established a free library for young working men.

In the late 1800s YMCA Surbiton struggled financially and closed for three years. It later merged with YMCA Kingston in 1885. Need for a central location led to the involvement of the Hawker Aircraft Company. They helped build the YMCA Hawker. This location became a hub for charity cricket matches. These matches helped rebuild the Oval after World War Two. One was even an international match between England XI and the Commonwealth XI.

After World War Two the YMCA Hawker Centre played a vital role. It offered housing sports and education. It provided a place of comfort and restoration for the community. Audrey Giles in her book described it as always full of hungry young men fed by resolute ladies. Alice Kendall received the Order of the Red Triangle for her exceptional work. Peter Giles a board member for years enjoyed the centre’s billiards and snooker tables.

The YMCA Hawker Centre’s transformation is striking. From an aircraft factory to a beacon of community support and peace. Today the YMCA Hawker Centre is a cornerstone of Kingston. It’s leased from the Royal Borough of Kingston ensuring its long-term future. It’s part of the St Paul’s Group a testament to the YMCA’s global reach. So as you explore this centre remember its rich history. Remember the people who built it and those who continue its legacy. The YMCA Hawker Centre is more than just a building it’s a living story.
