Yıldıztabya: A neighborhood forged from migration and community spirit. Originally named Dörtyol, this district in Gaziosmanpaşa, Istanbul, transformed over time, becoming Karlıtepe in 1960, named after the ice wells scattered throughout the area. Yıldıztabya’s story is one of growth and evolution. Established between 1950 and 1956, it became a haven for migrants, predominantly from the Rumeli and Balkan regions. These newcomers shaped the neighborhood’s identity, weaving together diverse cultures and traditions. By 2007, Yıldıztabya’s population had reached nearly 20,000, a testament to its appeal as a place to call home. Yıldıztabya’s heart beats with the rhythm of daily life. Schools, mosques, and a vibrant community center create a sense of belonging. The Gaziosmanpaşa Primary School, initially the 2nd Göçmen Primary School, opened its doors in 1952. Mithatpaşa Primary School followed in 1955. In 1974, the İmam Hatip High School began offering religious education. The Dörtyol Merkez Mosque, built in 1954, serves as a spiritual anchor. A remarkable figure, Hacı Fahri Kişılı (1901-1968), left an indelible mark on Yıldıztabya. He established an İlim Yayma Cemiyeti (Society for the Dissemination of Knowledge) within the neighborhood. Upon his passing, the building was entrusted to the Society, serving as a Quran course center and later as the Gaziosmanpaşa İmam Hatip High School. It continues its legacy as a student dormitory. Yıldıztabya, a neighborhood brimming with life, tells a story of migration, community building, and the power of education.
