Had anyone ever imagined such a magnificent structure gracing the Golden Horn? Right here, before the Yeni Cami, also known as the Valide Sultan Mosque or New Mosque, centuries of Ottoman history unfold. The Yeni Cami’s story begins in 1597. Safiye Sultan, wife of Sultan Murad III and mother of Sultan Mehmed III, envisioned a grand mosque. She commissioned Davut Ağa, a student of the famed architect Mimar Sinan. Sadly, Davut Ağa died in 1599, replaced by Dalgıç Ahmed Çavuş. Construction stretched over decades, finally completed in 1665 by another Valide Sultan, Turhan Sultan, mother of Mehmed IV. Political intrigue and financial woes plagued the project. Its location in the bustling Eminönü district, a primarily Jewish commercial center, caused controversy. Safiye Sultan aimed to expand Islamic influence. This move caused dissent, leading to the project’s abandonment after Mehmed III’s death in 1603. The partially built mosque languished, ravaged by a devastating fire in 1660. Turhan Sultan saw an opportunity for a pious act, reviving the project with architect Mustafa Ağa. The Yeni Cami, “New Valide Sultan Mosque,” was inaugurated in 1663. Look up at the mosque’s exterior. Sixty-six domes and semi-domes rise in a pyramid formation, crowned by two majestic minarets. The main dome reaches 36 meters high. The courtyard, a serene space, features a colonnaded peristyle and an ornamental ablution fountain. Inside, the square prayer hall measures 41 meters on each side. Four massive piers support the central dome, 17.5 meters in diameter. Semi-domes and smaller domes create a sense of vastness. Intricate Iznik tiles in shades of blue, green, and white adorn the interior. While considered slightly less refined than tiles in older mosques, they add to the mosque’s unique charm. A gilded screen marks the Royal Loge, once used by the imperial court. The Yeni Cami is more than a mosque; it’s a testament to the determination of two powerful women, a symbol of Ottoman resilience amidst political and natural disasters. Its story echoes through the centuries, a captivating blend of architectural brilliance, historical intrigue, and enduring faith.
