The inscription reads \”To the Glory of God, and in ever grateful memory of the men of this parish who gave their lives in the Great War, 1914-1919.\” You stand before the Yiewsley Parish War Memorial, a testament to the sacrifices made by local heroes. This imposing stone cross, standing tall amidst the peaceful churchyard of St Matthew’s Church, is a poignant reminder of the devastating impact of both World Wars on the small village of Yiewsley. Erected in 1921, this solemn structure commemorates the 128 men from the parish who perished in the First World War. The names of these brave souls are etched on the sides and rear of the memorial’s plinth. On the base, you see a vase inscribed with the words: \”British Legion Women’s Section.\” In 2009, the memorial was rededicated to include the names of those who died in the Second World War, adding 73 more names to its somber roster. To this day, every year, the community gathers here on Remembrance Sunday to pay their respects to the brave souls whose sacrifice made this day possible.
