Gazing across the shimmering Marmara Sea, imagine Yeşilköy as a tranquil seaside village. It’s hard to believe this serene spot was once the stage for world-altering events. Yeşilköy, or San Stefano as it was known before 1926, holds a rich and fascinating history. This “Green Village,” a name bestowed by writer Halit Ziya Uşaklıgil, has witnessed the ebb and flow of empires and cultures. Yeşilköy played a pivotal role in the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-1878. It was here that the Russian forces halted their march on Constantinople. The subsequent Treaty of San Stefano, signed in Yeşilköy, redrew the map of the Balkans. The legacy of this treaty resonates even today. Years later, in 1909, the decision to exile Sultan Abdülhamid II was made at the Yeşilköy yacht club, marking another turning point in Ottoman history. The tremors of war and political upheaval weren’t the only forces to shape Yeşilköy. A devastating earthquake in 1894, followed by a powerful tsunami, reshaped the coastline. The sea retreated dramatically, only to return with ferocious waves that wreaked havoc on the village. Amidst this tumultuous history, Yeşilköy also nurtured moments of innovation. The first aviation facilities in the Ottoman Empire were built here in 1912, laying the groundwork for the future Turkish Air Force. The area also became a refuge, albeit a tragic one, for cholera-stricken soldiers during the Balkan Wars. Thousands were brought to Yeşilköy, with many finding their final resting place near the train station. Yeşilköy’s story is etched into its architecture. The elegant Art Nouveau wooden houses, remnants of a bygone era, stand as silent witnesses to the village’s transformation into a favored retreat for Istanbul’s elite. These architectural gems, along with the historic churches, mosque, and even a Byzantine-era sacred spring, weave a tapestry of cultural influences. Today, Yeşilköy thrives as a vibrant suburb, its past interwoven with its present. The echoes of history mingle with the sounds of modern life, creating a unique atmosphere that captivates visitors. As you explore Yeşilköy, let your imagination soar, transporting you back to the pivotal moments that shaped this remarkable place.
