The scent of roasting chestnuts hangs heavy in the air. This is Yeniköy Mahallesi. A neighbourhood steeped in history. A place where old and new intertwine.

Yeniköy Mahallesi boasts a rich past. It was once a Byzantine village. Later it was repopulated by Greeks and Vlach families. They called it Neohori meaning “new village”. This name was eventually translated into Turkish. The Ottoman officials adopted it.

For centuries Yeniköy was a vibrant maritime trading town. A majority Greek community lived there. Armenian and Jewish minorities also thrived. Wealthy non-Muslims built magnificent yalıs along the coast. These are waterfront mansions. They are a testament to the neighbourhood’s prosperity.

The 1955 Istanbul pogrom sadly altered Yeniköy’s demographic landscape. It diminished its Greek Armenian and Jewish populations. Yet remnants remain. The Surp Asdvadzadzin Armenian church stands as a silent witness to this past. The Yeniköy Synagogue still survives too.

Yeniköy today is known for its upscale atmosphere. It is a haven of stylish restaurants and cafes. Many of the yalıs are amongst Istanbul’s most expensive properties. Köybaşı Caddesi the main avenue runs along the Bosphorus. It offers breathtaking views. Neighbouring areas such as Yalılar Bağlar Mevkii and Kalender are considered part of Yeniköy.

Notable buildings grace Yeniköy. The small Osman Reis Mosque stands out. Architect Alexander Vallaury designed it in 1904. He also designed the nearby yalıs of Ahmed Afif Pasha. Agatha Christie stayed there in 1933. She wrote Murder on the Orient Express there.

Yeniköy’s Panagia Kumariotisa Greek Orthodox Church holds a unique story. Sultan Mahmud II’s personal physician Stefanos Karatheodori commissioned it in 1837. His and his son’s tombstones lie near the wooden bell tower. Yeniköy Cemetery is another historic site a resting place for generations of Muslims.

The neighbourhood’s educational institutions are also noteworthy. Yeniköy İlkokulu and Yeniköy Mehmetçik İlköğretim Okulu serve as primary and middle schools. Tarabya British Schools has a campus in Yeniköy too.

Yeniköy Mahallesi has also produced notable figures. Peter the Byzantine served the Ecumenical Patriarchate. Constantine Cavafy the famous Egyptian Greek poet lived here as a teenager. His bust stands in the Panagia church’s yard. The Tugay apartment building is another landmark. Vehbi Koç a prominent businessman lived there. It is a neighbourhood with a fascinating history. A place where the echoes of the past mingle with the vibrancy of the present. Yeniköy’s story is far from over. It continues to evolve. Its rich tapestry of cultures and traditions endures. Come experience the magic of Yeniköy Mahallesi.
