Deep in the Yarra Valley, nestled amidst tranquil bushland, lies the quaint township of Yellingbo. A place where time seems to slow down. A place where nature whispers secrets of the past. Yellingbo’s story is one of evolving identities, from Claxton to Parslows Bridge. Finally, it took its current name, Yellingbo, in the 1930s. This name honors the last known Aboriginal inhabitant and translates to “today” in the local Aboriginal language. Yellingbo stands at the crossroads of Parslows Road and the Healesville-Koo Wee Rup Road. Here you’ll find a general store, a primary school dating back to 1954, a public hall, and a vital fire brigade. But Yellingbo is more than just a small town. It’s a guardian of Victoria’s natural heritage. Nearby, along the Woori Yallock, Cockatoo, and Sheep Station Creeks, lie crucial fauna reserves. These reserves protect two of Victoria’s state faunal emblems: the Helmeted Honeyeater and the Leadbeater’s Possum. The Woori Yallock Creek sub-catchment is renowned for its rich biodiversity, particularly the area around the Yellingbo Nature Conservation Reserve. This reserve and the surrounding private and public bushland harbor a remarkable array of rare and threatened species. Imagine the Helmeted Honeyeater flitting through the trees. Picture the elusive Leadbeater’s Possum peering from its hidden den. These precious creatures, along with a multitude of unique plants, thrive in this rural sanctuary just 50 kilometers from Melbourne. To safeguard these critically endangered emblems, the Victorian Government is establishing a new conservation area. This area will consist of a network of wildlife corridors. These corridors will link major reserves like the Yellingbo Nature Conservation Reserve with others like Coranderrk, Warramate Hills, and Beenak Bushland Reserve. This interconnected system ensures the long-term survival of these vulnerable species. Yellingbo is also part of the WHYLD community. This acronym represents the connected towns of Woori Yallock, Hoddles Creek, Yellingbo, Launching Place, and Don Valley. They work together to preserve the unique character of this region. Yellingbo’s story is a testament to its commitment to nature and the preservation of the “today” it represents.
