How quickly times change. Holy Nativity Anglican Church, Hughesdale stands here as a testament to that truth. This church, dedicated in 1961, was once a bustling hub of the community. It served as a chapel of ease for St Peter’s, Murrumbeena. The area was growing rapidly in the post-war years, and this new church was built to accommodate the expanding congregation. It was a time when Sunday mornings meant families dressed in their finest, gathering within these walls. The sounds of hymns and prayers filled the air. However, as the decades passed, attendance dwindled. The once-full pews became emptier. The lively church, once echoing with the laughter of children and the murmur of community, eventually fell silent. In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic forced the suspension of services at Holy Nativity Anglican Church, Hughesdale. Sadly, those services never resumed. On Christmas Eve of 2023, a poignant deconsecration service marked the final chapter of this church’s story. The echoes of hymns and prayers are now just memories. The laughter of children, once so commonplace, is gone. Holy Nativity Anglican Church, Hughesdale stands as a reminder of how time, like faith, can shift and change, leaving behind a legacy both beautiful and bittersweet.
