“A pump house?” you might ask, raising an eyebrow at the elegant Ybl Budai Kreatív Ház. Indeed, this architectural gem, nestled beside the Várkert Bazár, began its life in the late 19th century as a vital piece of infrastructure. Designed by the renowned Miklós Ybl, the Ybl Budai Kreatív Ház initially served as a water pump house for the nearby Royal Palace. Ybl, a master of his craft, approached even this utilitarian project with the same artistic flair he applied to his grand palaces. He ensured the pump house wasn’t merely functional but also a feast for the eyes, incorporating Renaissance and Baroque elements. The two-story building housed powerful steam pumps that drew water from the Danube, filtering it through a gravel layer before sending it uphill to the palace, its kitchens, stables, and gardens. Ybl’s foresight extended to flood prevention. He constructed the Ybl Budai Kreatív Ház on a meter-thick, lime-mortared limestone slab. A special, water-resistant plaster further protected the building, ensuring its resilience against even the most persistent floods. This innovative construction remains a marvel of engineering. In 1905, the pump house closed with the advent of Budapest’s modern water system. Yet, the building, with its charming café, remained a beloved gathering spot for locals. The Ybl Budai Kreatív Ház endured through turbulent times, including damage during World War II. A renovation in 1992 uncovered remnants of the original locks, coffers, and tunnels. But the building later fell into disuse, even serving as a casino for a time. Its fortunes changed in 2016 when the Pallas Athena Foundation acquired the property and undertook a comprehensive restoration. They meticulously revived the façade, modernized the building systems, and rebuilt the loggia. The former café space now houses a restaurant, bathed in natural light and adorned with elegant gold and vanilla hues. A unique lift from the turn of the century and a grand staircase connect the café to the lower levels. These lower levels now host exhibition spaces, showcasing contemporary art and Eastern cultural relics. Be sure to look up and admire the sgrafitto artwork by Róbert Scholtz that adorns the loggia’s cross vault. Enclosed by glass walls, this space offers breathtaking views of the Danube and Várkert Bazár. Today, the Ybl Budai Kreatív Ház is a vibrant cultural hub. It stands as a testament to its rich and varied past, seamlessly blending history with modern artistry.
