On a foundation of whispers from Byzantium, the Yayla Kambur Mustafa Efendi Cami stands. It speaks of resilience and rebirth. Imagine a cistern, a relic of the Byzantine era. Locals called it the “Kafir-i Kebir Mahzeni,” the “Infidel’s Great Cistern.” Measuring 23 by 12 meters, this underground chamber lay hidden beneath the city, a secret waiting to be rediscovered. In the 17th century, Mustafa Pasha, then Governor of Baghdad, envisioned a different purpose for this space. He ordered a mosque to be built atop the old cistern. The Yayla Kambur Mustafa Efendi Cami rose, a testament to his vision. Tragedy struck in 1918. The Cibali fire ravaged Istanbul, and the Yayla Kambur Mustafa Efendi Cami suffered extensive damage. It lay in ruins for years, a forgotten sanctuary. By 1950, the damaged structure was completely demolished. But the story doesn’t end there. Old photographs and documents preserved the memory of the mosque. Through the generosity of benefactors, a reconstruction project began. Using reinforced concrete, the Yayla Kambur Mustafa Efendi Cami was painstakingly rebuilt. In 2006, it reopened its doors, a symbol of Istanbul’s enduring spirit. Today, the Yayla Kambur Mustafa Efendi Cami stands as a blend of old and new. Its main entrance is on Haci Salih Efendi Street, while another opens onto Sofular Street. The courtyard sits elevated above street level. A flight of marble stairs leads visitors up to the mosque’s peaceful haven. The two-story structure features walls constructed with alternating rows of brick and cut stone. Inside, two rows of windows illuminate the prayer hall. The wooden pulpit and the mihrab, crafted from tile, offer a glimpse into traditional craftsmanship. The ceiling, adorned with small wooden squares, adds a touch of geometric elegance. A wooden upper mihrap rests on slender wooden pillars. The minaret, originally brick, was rebuilt with cut stone after the fire. The mosque’s small cemetery holds the remains of notable figures. Among them are Sarıgürz Nureddin Efendi, a Hanafi scholar, and Sinaneddin Yusuf Efendi, renowned for his commentary on the Beyzavi Tafsir. Their presence adds another layer of historical significance to the Yayla Kambur Mustafa Efendi Cami.
