Yavuz Sinan Mahallesi is named after Yavuz Sinan. This man commissioned the Yavuz Er Sinan Camii. It is one of Istanbul’s oldest mosques. Some records say it was built in 1455. Others cite 1484. Let’s imagine Fatih Sultan Mehmet riding in disguise. He went outside the city walls to hunt. It got late. He returned to the city but the gates were locked. The gatekeeper did not recognize him. He demanded that the gate be opened. The guard refused. The Sultan revealed himself. The guard then opened the gate.
Fatih admired the guard’s dedication. He rewarded him by building the Yavuz Er Sinan Camii. After his death, Yavuz Er was buried in the mosque’s grounds. The mosque’s entrance is on Yavuz Sinan Street. The road has risen over time. You must go down a few steps to enter. Columns flank the entrance. The spaces between are filled with glass and profiles. This creates a last congregation area.
Inside are three prayer rows and a small mihrab. A women’s section sits above the entrance. A wooden staircase provides access. Four wooden pillars support the upper level. The left wall has three lower windows. The right wall has two. The upper level has two honeycomb windows on each side.
In the 1970s the mihrab was covered with marble. In the 1990s the minbar was made of Afyon marble. The wooden pulpit hangs in the left corner. The dome has no windows. The walls and dome meet with plaster triangles. The eight-meter dome is covered in lead. Natural gas heats the building. The mihrab wall is marble. The side walls are ceramic. About 50 people can worship here.
The minaret is to the right. It is where the last congregation area joins the harim. It is cylindrical and made of cut stone. It was later plastered with cement. The door is under the women’s section stairs. Ablution facilities are outside next to the minaret. Yavuz Er Sinan Camii is among Istanbul’s earliest mosques. It stands as a testament to faith and history. Yavuz Sinan Mahallesi holds this treasure.
