Did you know Yaşar Kemal, one of Turkey’s most celebrated novelists, lived and died in Istanbul? He was more than just a writer. Yaşar Kemal was a voice for the oppressed and a champion of human rights.

Yaşar Kemal’s life was as captivating as his novels. Born Kemal Sadık Gökçeli in 1923, he later adopted the pen name Yaşar Kemal. His early life was marked by hardship. He lost an eye in a childhood accident and witnessed his father’s murder. These experiences shaped his worldview and fueled his passion for justice.

Moving to Istanbul, Yaşar Kemal began his career as a journalist. He joined the Cumhuriyet newspaper and embraced his new identity. Istanbul became his home. It was a place where he could express his views. It was also a place where he faced political persecution.

Yaşar Kemal often spoke about sensitive issues. He highlighted the oppression of the Kurdish people. This led to trials and suspended jail sentences. He was even accused of separatist propaganda. Yet, Yaşar Kemal remained undeterred. He used his words as weapons against injustice.

His most famous novel, “Memed, My Hawk,” brought him international acclaim. It told the story of a peasant who stood up against powerful landlords. This book earned him a Nobel Prize nomination.

Yaşar Kemal’s works often drew inspiration from Anatolian legends. He masterfully blended folklore with social commentary. He wrote about the lives and struggles of ordinary people. He explored themes of rebellion, mortality, and the human condition.

Beyond his literary achievements, Yaşar Kemal was a political activist. He joined the Workers Party of Turkey. He established the Marxist magazine Ant. His political involvement led to arrests and periods of exile.

Despite the challenges, Yaşar Kemal received numerous awards and honors. He was recognized for his contributions to literature and human rights. France awarded him the Legion d’Honneur. Several universities granted him honorary doctorates.

In his later years, Yaşar Kemal continued to write and speak out. He remained a prominent figure in Turkish society. On January 14, 2015, he was hospitalized in Istanbul due to respiratory issues. He died on February 28, 2015, at the age of 91.

Yaşar Kemal’s funeral was held at Teşvikiye Mosque. It was attended by dignitaries and thousands of mourners. He was buried in Zincirlikuyu Cemetery beside his first wife, Thilda.
