Did you know that Yarra Glen’s name wasn’t always Yarra Glen? Originally called Yarra Flats this charming town in Victoria’s Yarra Valley underwent a name change in 1889. The railway’s arrival prompted the shift. The post office and school followed suit. Yarra Glen then became the official name. This marked a turning point for the settlement incorporating the older settlement of Burgoyne.

Nestled in the heart of the Yarra Valley Yarra Glen boasts a rich history. It’s a place where pioneering spirits and natural beauty intertwine. The Ryrie brothers William James and Donald established the Yering run in 1837. This vast 17000-hectare property marked the beginning of European settlement. These brothers planted the area’s first grapevines in 1838 producing their first wine in 1845. Joseph Furphy often considered the father of the Australian novel was born on the station in 1843. He may have been the first white child born in the district.

Imagine Yarra Glen’s main street in 1888. The Grand Hotel a magnificent two-story stuccoed building stood proudly. Its four-story Italianate tower added later is a testament to the town’s prosperity during the boom period. The hotel’s stunning features including the masonry arcade cast-iron veranda and parapet make it an important example of architecture from that era. It’s now a National Trust-listed gem a reminder of Yarra Glen’s vibrant past.

The Yarra Valley wasn’t immune to tragedy. The Black Friday fires of 1939 devastated the area. Similarly the 2009 fires left their mark. These events highlight the area’s resilience. They underscore the community’s ability to rebuild and thrive.

Today Yarra Glen is more than just a historical landmark. It’s a hub for wine lovers sports enthusiasts and those seeking a peaceful escape. The Yarra Valley Racing Club hosts around nine race meetings annually including the Yarra Glen Cup in March. Yarra Valley Harness Racing Club also conducts regular meetings. The Yarra Glen Football Club competes in the Yarra Valley Mountain District Football League. The town offers a captivating blend of history heritage and modern-day attractions. A visit to Yarra Glen is a journey through time and a celebration of the Yarra Valley’s unique charm.
