Yaringa Marine National Park was established on November 16, 2002. The park protects a mosaic of habitats, including saltmarsh, mangroves, mudflats, and seagrass meadows. Over 82% of the park is intertidal, meaning it’s exposed during low tide and submerged during high tide. This creates a dynamic environment, constantly changing with the rhythm of the sea.
Yaringa Marine National Park boasts some of the largest white mangroves (Avicennia marina) in Victoria. These mangroves form a fringe along the park’s edge, providing shelter for crabs and fish like gobies, mullet, and toadfish. The park also holds extensive seagrass beds. These underwater meadows are vital nurseries for many fish species, including the commercially important King George whiting.
