Whispers of history linger within these walls. Welcome to the Yangziwei Catholic Church. Or rather welcome to what was once known as the grandest church in the Far East. Standing before you is the St Ignatius Cathedral also called the Xujiahui Cathedral. This magnificent structure a testament to faith resilience and architectural prowess. Built between 1906 and 1910 by French Jesuits it’s a stunning example of Neo-Gothic design. The English architect William Doyle crafted this masterpiece. Its imposing red brick walls and towering spires once soared over Shanghai.
The Yangziwei Catholic Church wasn’t always this grand. A smaller Greek style church stood here before. It was demolished in the 1980s. But long before even that first church Xujiahui was a small village. Xu Guangqi a prominent figure in Ming Dynasty China once mentioned this area. His influence on science and technology is remarkable. His deep faith played a significant role too. He helped establish a Christian community in this very place.
The Yangziwei Catholic Church endured hardship. The Cultural Revolution in 1966 brought devastation. Red Guards vandalized the cathedral. They destroyed spires stained glass and even beat priests and nuns. Bishop Aloysius Zhang Jiashu’s unwavering prayer during this time is a powerful testament to faith. For a decade the church sadly served as a grain warehouse.
Yet hope persevered. The Yangziwei Catholic Church reopened in 1978. Its spires were restored in the early 1980s. In 1989 the first ever Mandarin Mass was celebrated. This significant event marked a new era for the church. Today the Yangziwei Catholic Church continues its restoration. It proudly displays newly created stained glass windows. These windows feature Chinese characters and icons. They were unveiled in time for the 2010 World Expo in Shanghai.
This impressive church once held 2500 worshippers. It hosted China’s first national Catholic conference in 1924. This meeting was a crucial step in the sinicization of the Catholic Church. The Yangziwei Catholic Church played a vital role in the anti-Japanese War. It served as a refuge for many. The church remains a powerful symbol. It speaks of faith perseverance and the enduring spirit of Shanghai. Its beauty is truly awe-inspiring. Its history is both inspiring and heartbreaking.
