“A scholar’s sanctuary,” a local once described this place to me. Here we stand before 华东理工大学奉贤校区C教 (Huádōng Lǐgōng Dàxué Fèngxián Xiàoqū C Jiào), or East China University of Science and Technology, Fengxian Campus Building C. This sprawling campus, nestled in Fengxian District, is a testament to the evolving landscape of education in Shanghai. Inaugurated in September 2007, Building C plays a vital role in undergraduate education, housing first, second, and third-year students, as well as some first-year research students. The campus itself spans an impressive 1429 acres, with Building C contributing to the 409,000 square meters of developed space. This modern structure stands in stark contrast to the area’s historical roots. Did you know this land was once a desolate expanse of salt fields and alkali flats? The transformation from salt production to a hub of learning is truly remarkable. The very ground beneath our feet has witnessed a dramatic shift. Imagine the salt workers who once toiled here. Now, replace that image with the vibrant energy of students pursuing knowledge. East China University of Science and Technology, Fengxian Campus Building C, is a testament to Shanghai’s commitment to education and innovation. This building, with its five stories reaching towards the sky, is a beacon of hope for the future. The air hums with the quiet focus of students within its walls. The story of this campus is inextricably linked to the history of the surrounding villages. Jiaqiao Village and Yingfang Village, located to the west and northwest, have histories stretching back centuries. These villages, originally reliant on salt production, played a significant role in the area’s economic development. The transformation of this land, from salt fields to a university campus, highlights the incredible changes that Shanghai has undergone. The journey of East China University of Science and Technology to Fengxian District began in 2003. The Ministry of Education approved the establishment of the new campus in Fengxian District in December of that year. The land, totaling 1544 acres, was acquired near Shanghai Normal University’s Fengxian Campus. Construction began in phases, with the first phase encompassing 800 acres and the second, 744 acres. This ambitious project, with a total investment of approximately 18 billion yuan, aimed to create a state-of-the-art learning environment. The official land-use agreement for the Fengxian campus was signed on April 8, 2004. By 2010, the university finally secured the official land ownership certificate, solidifying its presence in Fengxian. As you explore the campus, remember the rich history of this transformed land.
