Imagine the city’s excitement when construction began in 1991. In 1993, the Yangpu Bridge finally opened to traffic. It quickly became a symbol of Shanghai’s modernization. For a brief time, the Yangpu Bridge held the title of the world’s longest cable-stayed bridge. That was until 1995. Then the Pont de Normandie opened in France.
The Yangpu Bridge’s design involved collaboration. The Shanghai Municipal Engineering Design Institute, Shanghai Urban Construction College, and Shanghai Urban Construction Design Institute worked together. They got assistance from Holger S. Svensson. The Shanghai Huangpujiang Bridge Engineering Construction company built it.
Look closely at the Yangpu Bridge’s structure. It is a double-tower and double-cable-stayed bridge. The part that spans the river is 1172 meters long. The width of 30.35 meters accommodates six lanes of traffic. Three lanes go in each direction. The two pylons soar to a height of 223 meters. Ships can pass underneath. The highest ship clearance is 48 meters. This is a necessity because of the heavy river traffic.
Originally, the Yangpu Bridge was unpainted. For the city’s celebration of the year 2000, it was painted red. This added a vibrant splash of color to Shanghai’s skyline. The name Yangpu Bridge is inscribed on each pylon. These characters were handwritten by Deng Xiaoping.
Consider the sheer volume of traffic that crosses the Yangpu Bridge every day. As of 2006, more than 100,000 vehicles used it daily. There are also two-meter-wide sightseeing sidewalks on both sides.
