Overlooking the sprawling metropolis of Taipei, we find ourselves at the foot of Yangmingshan National Park. It’s hard to believe that this tranquil oasis, a sanctuary of volcanic peaks and steaming hot springs, is just a stone’s throw from the bustling city. Yangmingshan National Park, once known as “Grass Mountain,” has a history as captivating as its landscape. During the Qing Dynasty, the mountains were frequently set ablaze by officials fearful of sulfur theft. The fires prevented the growth of trees, leaving only grasslands, hence the name “Grass Mountain.”

In a tribute to the Ming Dynasty scholar Wang Yangming, the park was renamed in 1950. Yangmingshan National Park, officially established in 1985, encompasses a diverse landscape. From the park’s highest peak, Qixing Mountain, a dormant volcano reaching over 1,120 meters, you can witness panoramic views of Taipei. Venture into Xiaoyoukeng, and you’ll be greeted by a post-volcanic landscape with fumaroles, those vents releasing steam and gases, reminding us of the earth’s fiery heart.

Beyond the geological wonders, Yangmingshan boasts a rich biodiversity. Over 1,360 plant species thrive here, including the rare Taiwan isoetes, an aquatic fern found only in Taiwan. Keep an eye out for the 168 butterfly species, particularly from May to August, when they dance among the blossoms. Be sure to experience the park’s renowned hot springs, a legacy of its volcanic past. Lengshuikeng Hot Springs offers a rejuvenating escape, the warm, mineral-rich waters soothing away the city’s cares.

As you explore Yangmingshan National Park, remember the delicate balance between nature and human presence. Tread lightly, leave no trace, and let this natural treasure continue to inspire awe for generations to come.
