Could a simple cypress tree hold the secrets of a sultan and a saint? Here at the Yahya Efendi Külliyesi, it is believed that just such a tree marks the spot where Yahya Efendi, a revered scholar and Sufi mystic, met Khidr, a revered figure in Islamic tradition. Yahya Efendi Külliyesi is more than just a complex. It is a story etched in stone and whispered by the wind, a testament to a life intertwined with Ottoman royalty and spiritual devotion. Yahya Efendi, born in Trabzon in 1495, shared a unique bond with Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent. Not only were they born in the same year, but Yahya Efendi was also Suleiman’s milk brother. This connection forged a lifelong relationship of mutual respect and affection, extending even to Suleiman’s son, Selim II. Yahya Efendi Külliyesi began as a humble lodge, mosque, madrasa, bathhouse, and fountain, all surrounded by fragrant gardens and vineyards, established by Yahya Efendi himself in 1538. After his death in 1570, Selim II commissioned the renowned architect Mimar Sinan to expand the complex and construct a domed mausoleum over Yahya Efendi’s grave. Over the centuries, the külliyesi continued to evolve. Generous donations and contributions from admirers led to the addition of new buildings, including a tomb for Grand Vizier Güzelse Ali Pasha in 1621 and a fountain by Cezayirli Gazi Hasan Pasha in 1777. Even after the closure of dervish lodges in 1925, the mosque within the Yahya Efendi Külliyesi continued to serve the community. Today, within the külliyesi’s walls, the tomb of Yahya Efendi remains a popular pilgrimage site. The complex itself showcases a blend of architectural styles, reflecting its rich and layered history. From the simple wooden gate to the intricately decorated sarcophagi within the Güzelse Ali Pasha Tomb, each element tells a story. The mosque-tevhidhane, with its panoramic view of the Bosphorus, offers a serene space for reflection. The wooden harem and selamlik sections provide a glimpse into the daily lives of the sheikh and his dervishes. But perhaps the most captivating aspect of the Yahya Efendi Külliyesi is its tranquil atmosphere. The dense greenery, the mystical air, the magnificent Bosphorus view – all combine to create a truly special place. As Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar so eloquently wrote, “Divine forgiveness almost wears a beautiful human face in the Yahya Efendi Lodge.” It is a place where death feels intimately close to life, a garden of love and a path to enlightenment.
