Xiyan Church also known as Notre Dame du Ciel or the Virgin Mary Ascends to Heaven was the vision of Ma Xiangbo a prominent Catholic figure. He along with others spearheaded its construction. The church occupies a significant area 63 mu. Originally a church within a larger cemetery it served as a place of prayer and burial for believers.
Designed by the renowned architect Hudec Xiyan Church showcases a remarkable Byzantine style. Its exterior features distinctive elements sharp small doors small windows thick walls and a rounded shell-like roof. The exquisite design is further enhanced by the use of reinforced concrete.
Sadly the Cultural Revolution left its mark. Tombs within the associated cemetery were destroyed. The church itself and the cemetery were confiscated. Only the church and its bell tower remain today. The bell’s resonant sound was once said to carry for ten li.
Despite the hardships Xiyan Church persevered. In 1994 it was designated an excellent historical building in the city. A decade later in 2008 the church was returned to the Shanghai Catholic Diocese. The cemetery however remains part of the Shanghai Zoo. A poignant reminder of the church’s past.
Today Xiyan Church continues to serve its community. Masses are held regularly. The church’s beautiful Gothic windows offer a glimpse into its rich history.
