A bustling marketplace once stood here. Now stands XIX kerület Kispest. Imagine its transformation.

Kispest the 19th district of Budapest has a rich history. It began as a small village. It was founded in 1871. It lay on the border of Pest. This is why it was called Kispest meaning Little Pest.

Over time Kispest grew. Its population exploded from 1820 to 72838 between 1880 and 1990. This growth was partly due to the railway in 1885 and the tramway in 1900. These offered convenient transport links. People could easily commute to work in Pest. The Wekerletelep suburb also played a role. It was built in the 1900s. Its detached houses and green spaces attracted many. The area’s character changed further. This was due to a large housing estate. It was built between the 1960s and 1980s. This added 12100 flats. Approximately 33000 people lived there. It became one of Budapest’s largest housing estates.

Kispest’s role in history also deserves mention. In 1956 Soviet troops entered Budapest to suppress an uprising. Some of the first street clashes occurred here in Kispest. They advanced from the southeast up Üllői Street.

Today Kispest is a vibrant district. It has a modern metro line connecting it to the city center. The Határ út station is extremely busy. An estimated 40000 passengers use it daily. Kispest is also a center for sports and culture. Many clubs and associations thrive there. The local government supports education with numerous schools. There are also care centers for the elderly and disadvantaged.

Kispest’s development continues. There is a focus on public spaces parks and playgrounds. The EU funds have helped to create new bike paths. The district also focuses on international cooperation. It has sister cities in many countries.

Kispest’s story is one of transformation. From a small village to a bustling district. It shows Budapest’s dynamic growth and resilience. Remember this when you explore its streets.
