Hidden within the bustling heart of Shanghai, the Xiao Tao Yuan Mosque whispers tales of a vibrant past. Did you know that this architectural gem, also known as the Shanghai Western Mosque, holds the title of the largest mosque in this sprawling metropolis? The Xiao Tao Yuan Mosque stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of Islam in Shanghai. Its story begins in 1917, thanks to the vision of Jin Ziyun, Director of the Shanghai Islamic Board of Directors. He secured the land, laying the foundation for what would become a cornerstone of the Muslim community. The mosque wasn’t always the structure you see today. It underwent a significant transformation in 1925, emerging two years later in its present form. Interestingly, the mosque’s location once housed the Shanghai Islamic Normal School, which later relocated to Qinglian Street. The school’s new name became the Pingliang Islamic Normal School. The mosque’s architecture is a fascinating blend of West Asian Islamic tradition and Chinese influences. The vibrant green and white exterior immediately draws the eye. Above the entrance, the word “mosque” is elegantly inscribed in Chinese calligraphy by the renowned artist Luo Junti. Inside, the two-story prayer hall, capable of accommodating 500 worshippers, exudes a sense of serenity. Arched windows allow natural light to filter through, illuminating the space. The main prayer hall can accommodate up to 500 people with a floor area of 500 m2. Four domes grace the corners of the mosque, complementing the single, elegant minaret. The mosque is nestled within a rectangular courtyard, adding to its tranquil ambiance. On the eastern side, a three-story building, constructed in traditional Chinese style, houses various facilities. These include a lecture room, offices, a library, a reading room, a sermon room, and ablution areas. On the southern side, you’ll find the Imam’s room, a reception room, and a bathroom. The Xiao Tao Yuan Mosque played a significant role in the lives of Muslims traveling to Mecca for Hajj. Between 1920 and 1940, it served as a gathering point and provided essential services for pilgrims from various regions of China. Today, the Xiao Tao Yuan Mosque continues to serve as a vital center for the Muslim community in Shanghai. It’s home to the Shanghai Islamic Association, established in 1962, and also houses the Management Committee of Mosques in Shanghai. Just a short walk east of Laoximen Station, this architectural marvel invites you to step into its tranquil embrace and discover its rich history.
