Established in 1905 Wylie High School stands proudly before you. This isn’t just any high school. It’s a cornerstone of Wylie Texas a place where generations have learned grown and thrived.
Wylie High School wasn’t always this impressive structure. Its early years were humble. The school started small operating on a shoestring budget. The Birmingham family stepped in providing the funds for its first building. Imagine the spirit of those early pioneers their dedication to education in a small Texas town.
Through the years Wylie High School moved several times. In 1976 it relocated to 516 Hilltop Lane. This building served the community well until the current building opened in 1996. The old Hilltop Lane building didn’t go to waste. It was transformed into Wylie Junior High later Burnett Junior High.
The growth of Wylie and its surrounding communities led to another milestone. Wylie East High School opened its doors in 2007. It initially catered to ninth graders only. It eventually became a full 9-12 school graduating its first class in 2012. Wylie High School however continues to be a vital part of the community.
The school has seen its share of challenges. The COVID-19 pandemic presented a major hurdle. Yet even then the spirit of Wylie High School shone through. Principal Virdie Montgomery drove 800 miles to personally congratulate each of the 612 graduating seniors. Their graduation ceremonies were cancelled but the celebration of their achievements persevered. Today Brian Alexander serves as the school’s dedicated principal.
Wylie High School boasts a rich extracurricular life. The school is home to chapters of the National Honor Society and Air Force Junior ROTC. Students participate in numerous activities from SkillsUSA to Rachel’s Challenge. Athletic programs thrive. The Wylie Pirates compete in various sports including football where they achieved a state championship in 1978. A vibrant arts program adds to the school’s rich tapestry.
The school’s legacy extends beyond its walls. Notable alumni include several NFL and CFL players. These individuals showcase the talents and achievements fostered within Wylie High School’s walls. Wylie High School is more than bricks and mortar. It is a testament to the power of education community and perseverance. It’s a place where dreams are nurtured and futures are shaped.
