Ever wonder how many chocolate bars it takes to build a dream? Here at World’s Finest Chocolate in Chicago, that’s not a rhetorical question. World’s Finest Chocolate isn’t just a factory. It’s the embodiment of Edmond Opler Sr.’s American dream, a testament to hard work, resilience, and a whole lot of chocolate. From humble beginnings delivering cocoa by horse-drawn wagon in New York City for a mere $3 a week, Opler Sr. rose to become a chocolate magnate. World’s Finest Chocolate, originally the Cook Chocolate Company founded in 1939, became his legacy. In 1949, Opler Sr. had a stroke of genius: he created a division dedicated solely to fundraising, selling World’s Finest Chocolate bars to schools, churches, and other organizations. This innovative approach bypassed traditional marketing, allowing the company to focus on crafting quality chocolate and creating effective fundraising programs. Opler Sr.’s journey brought him to Chicago after World War I, following a doctor’s recommendation to seek cleaner air. He and his brother Arnold founded E&A Opler, a cocoa-packing company, which became the precursor to World’s Finest Chocolate. Opler Sr.’s drive led him to night classes at Northwestern University’s School of Commerce, and he even co-owned the Chicago-based chocolate maker Siren Mills before it was acquired by Nestle. World’s Finest Chocolate thrived even during the Great Depression, and in 1972, the company officially adopted the name of its fundraising division, cementing its identity. By the early 1970s, World’s Finest Chocolate was a fundraising powerhouse, with estimated annual sales of $20 million, helping raise approximately $180 million for various organizations. Opler Sr.’s foresight extended to securing a supply of cocoa beans, leading him to acquire Union Vale, a cocoa plantation on the island of St. Lucia. While only a small percentage of the company’s beans came from this plantation, it served as a model for improving living conditions in the region. The Opler legacy continued with Edmond Opler Jr., who took over the company eight years before his father retired in 1988 at the impressive age of 91. Edmond Jr., with his own distinct management style shaped by his college education, led the company into the 21st century. Today, World’s Finest Chocolate remains a fundraising giant, helping countless organizations achieve their goals. From a small boy delivering cocoa to a chocolate empire, the story of World’s Finest Chocolate is a truly sweet success story.
