This memorial serves as a poignant reminder of sacrifice. It honors those who served in submarines during both World Wars.
The World War Plaque War memorial stands as a testament to the courage and dedication of submariners. This includes those who served in the British Navy. This monument ensures their bravery is never forgotten.
The World War Plaque War memorial is a monumental stepped granite plinth. It is set into the Thames embankment wall. Large rectangular slabs and blocks of granite form its base. Upon this base, a large bas-relief sculptural bronze plaque is mounted. This plaque depicts the cross section of an early submarine’s interior. Sea spirits and fish surround it adding a mystical element.
An architectural framework surrounds the central bronze plaque. It is decorated with further sculptures and sculptural embellishments. To each side of the central bronze plaque are 40 bronze wreath hooks. They are shaped like anchors. These hooks serve as places to lay wreaths in remembrance.
An additional plaque was added below the large plaque in 1992. This commemorated the 70th anniversary of the original memorial. The World War Plaque War memorial has a powerful inscription at the top. It immortalizes the officers and men lost in submarine service.
On the left side of the main memorial is a list of submarines lost in the Great War 1914-1918. The right side lists submarines lost during the Second World War 1939-1945. The 70th Anniversary plaque reads “National Submarine War Memorial 1922”.
The plaque commemorates the memorial’s seventieth anniversary. It acknowledges the contribution of the Submariners Old Comrades, London. They showed devotion to the upkeep of this memorial. Peter P Rigby unveiled it.
