John Stenton Workman. A name whispered on the winds of Auckland, a name echoing through time. He wasn’t an Auckland native. He arrived in New Zealand in 1834, a young cabin boy aboard the whaling ship William Stoveld. But his story, much like the roots of a mighty kauri tree, spread far and wide, touching even this vibrant city. Workman’s tale begins on the shores of Kapiti Island, where he met Rewhaunga, a woman whose lineage traced back to the Ngāti Ira, Ngāti Kahungunu ki Wairarapa, and Rangitāne o Wairarapa tribes. Their union, blessed by the formidable chief Te Rauparaha, blossomed into a family of nine children. Workman’s life was one of adventure and adaptation. He managed a whaling station, worked as a shepherd and boatman, and witnessed the dramatic transformation of New Zealand. He even saw his first railway in Christchurch. Imagine him, a seasoned whaler, marveling at this newfangled contraption. His life intertwined with the Māori community. He married Rewhaunga in St Mary’s Church in Wairau. His descendants continued to gather at Pāpāwai Marae in Greytown. They honored their heritage, sharing stories, laughter, and the ever-important kai. Workman’s legacy extends beyond his immediate family, a testament to the enduring power of connection across cultures. His story reminds us that Auckland’s history isn’t just about buildings and streets. It’s about the people, the families, the interwoven threads of Māori and European cultures.
