Established in 1937 Howick Intermediate School has a long and fascinating history. Initially known as Howick District High School it served the children of the New Zealand Royal Fencible Corps. Many families of these soldiers had settled in the surrounding areas of Auckland. Mr F C Day was the first headmaster on the school site. As the local population grew more schools were needed. In 1961 Pakuranga College opened. Older students transferred there. Howick Primary opened in 1964 to accommodate younger children. Then in February 1965 the school was re-established as Howick Intermediate. It opened its doors to 456 students.

The official opening ceremony took place on April 2 1966. Mr Kinsella the Minister of Education performed the honours. Fifteen classrooms were ready. Eight were for Year 7 students. They were remodelled from the old District High School building. Seven new classrooms were built for Year 8 students. The school’s motto is De Bon Vouloir Servir which translates to To Serve With Goodwill. This motto links back to the motto of Lord Howick also known as Earl Grey. The school logo includes elements from Lord Howick’s coat of arms. It also shows ships representing the arrival of the Fencibles and crosses signifying early churches in the area.
