Sixty thousand roaring fans. That’s the unforgettable memory etched in my mind from a Linkin Park concert at Beijing Workers’ Stadium. This isn’t just any stadium. It’s a piece of Beijing’s history a symbol of the city’s energy and dynamism.
Beijing Workers’ Stadium. Built in 1959 it’s one of the Ten Great Buildings a testament to the ambition of the People’s Republic of China. Its original design was more than just a football pitch. It was a multi-purpose stadium hosting everything from athletics to the opening and closing ceremonies of the 1990 Asian Games.
But Beijing Workers’ Stadium holds a less-known record. In 1993 it witnessed an incredible feat of athleticism. World-class Chinese runners shattered world records here. Wang Junxia and Qu Yunxia set astonishing times for the 1500m 3000m and 10000m races. These records remain unbroken to this day. This was the stadium’s claim to fame beyond football.
The stadium’s history isn’t without its twists. It was initially slated to be the main stadium for the 2008 Summer Olympics. However plans changed and the Beijing National Stadium took center stage. Workers’ Stadium still played a vital role hosting Olympic football matches.
The Workers’ Stadium wasn’t just for sports. It hosted concerts for global superstars like Mariah Carey who kicked off her Chinese tour here. It’s a venue that effortlessly transitions between the roar of the crowd and the rhythmic pulse of music.
Workers’ Stadium closed in 2020 for a major rebuild. The renovations were extensive. The athletics track was removed to transform the stadium into a football-specific venue. A new underground plaza for fans was added enhancing the overall spectator experience. It reopened in March 2023 as a modern all-year-round destination. Even during the football off-season it’s transformed into an ice and snow wonderland.
The Beijing Workers’ Stadium. It’s more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a living testament to Beijing’s past its present and its future. It’s a place where history unfolds alongside electrifying entertainment. It’s a stadium that vibrates with stories waiting to be rediscovered.
