This was the Beijing National Laboratory for Molecular Sciences. It was established by ICCAS and Peking University. In 2005, ICCAS was appraised as an A category institute in the CAS. A year later, ICCAS received the highest score. This was in the national appraisal of chemistry departments and institutions.

ICCAS undertakes various important national science projects. These include Major National Basic Research Projects and National High Technology Development Projects. It also handles NSFC funded major and general projects. Additionally, ICCAS manages NSFC’s Excellent Youth Projects. It oversees innovation-oriented major and key projects of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
