Hidden beneath the surface of Woolwich lies a fascinating piece of history. This is Woolwich Sub Control a Cold War relic. It’s a concrete blockhouse built in 1954. It opened in March 1955. This unassuming structure played a vital role in London’s defense.

Woolwich Sub Control wasn’t just any bunker. It was a crucial part of the Civil Defence system. It reported directly to the main Woolwich Borough Control. This was in Southwood Road New Eltham. Both bunkers were remarkably similar. They were built by the same contractor.

Imagine the tension during the Cold War. The operators at Woolwich Sub Control would have monitored communications. They would have been ready to respond to any emergency. Their actions would have been critical in the event of a nuclear attack. The bunker remained operational until the Civil Defence Corps disbanded in 1968.

The building is remarkably well-preserved. The interior though has been altered. The original control room is now a sports hall and meeting room. A low entrance at the back was the emergency exit. It’s now used for ventilation. The plant room still boasts original switchgear and ventilation systems. A concrete plinth marks the spot of the removed standby generator. One room is a photographic darkroom. Even the original male and female toilets are intact.

Woolwich Sub Control’s story isn’t just about Cold War anxieties. It’s about adaptation and community. The building once crucial for national defense is now a community center. It’s a testament to Woolwich’s resilience. A reminder of the past that serves the present. It’s a fascinating blend of history and contemporary life. A true symbol of Woolwich’s enduring spirit.
