Beneath a dome that echoes the grandeur of a bygone era, stands Woodville. This mansion whispers tales of Penang’s Millionaire’s Row. Woodville isn’t just a building. It’s a story etched in stone and glass, a testament to the vision of Lim Lean Teng. Built in 1925 on Northam Road, now Jalan Sultan Ahmad Shah, Woodville stands as a proud symbol of Lim’s success. He wasn’t just a wealthy Chinese planter. He was a man who dreamt of a home that would stand apart from the rest. He envisioned a dome, inspired by the HSBC building on Beach Street. He wanted his Woodville to be unique. He commissioned British architect Joseph Charles Miller to bring his vision to life. Miller, known for his “castle mansion” designs, blended classical and modern styles. The result was Woodville, a mansion that resembled a French château, complete with a distinctive dome and a canopy of oyster glass. Lim Lean Teng moved into his dream home in February 1928. The housewarming party was a grand affair, lasting three days. Champagne flowed, and guests marveled at the luxury of Woodville. Lim was known for his lavish parties. In 1955, he hosted 800 guests for his granddaughter’s wedding reception. But Lim Lean Teng’s legacy extends beyond Woodville’s elegant walls. Known as “the man who gave away a million,” he was a renowned philanthropist. He donated generously to schools, orphanages, and even contributed to the Sungai Petani clock tower. He chaired the Teochew Association and helped found the Penang Planters Association. Woodville was more than just a mansion. It was the heart of a life lived fully, a place where history and generosity intertwined. Lim Lean Teng passed away at Woodville in 1963, aged 93. His wife remained in the mansion until her death two years later. Today, Woodville still stands on Millionaire’s Row, a silent witness to a remarkable life and a testament to the enduring power of a dream built in stone and glass.
