“Grand Uncle” is quite a respectful title isn’t it? We’re standing before the Tua Pek Kong Temple in Penang. It’s a place where history and faith intertwine. This temple isn’t just a building. It’s a testament to the enduring spirit of the Chinese community in Malaysia.
Tua Pek Kong is a deity in Peranakan folk religion. Ethnic Chinese people in Malaysia Singapore and parts of Indonesia practice this religion. He is often called the God of Prosperity. Some believe he embodies “Fu” from the “Fu Lu Shou” trio. This trio represents prosperity fortune and longevity. Others say he was a sailor from Fujian who made the ultimate sacrifice.
Let’s step back in time to the mid-18th century. Zhang Li a Hakka scholar was headed to Sumatra. A storm struck and his boat landed on Penang Island. Back then only 50 people lived here. Zhang Li stayed and became a respected teacher. He was known for his kindness. Villagers sought his guidance. Two men Chiu Hsiao Ching and Ma Fu Choon became his sworn brothers. The villagers called him Tuah Pek Kong.
One day Chiu and Ma found Zhang Li lifeless near a boulder. The villagers mourned and buried him there. Chiu and Ma eventually died and were buried beside him. Their graves can still be seen behind the Sea Pearl Island Tua Pek Kong Temple.
The story of Zhang Li shows the brotherhood among the Chinese diaspora. He is now worshipped throughout Malaysia. People often mistake Tua Pek Kong for Tu Di Gong. They look similar.
The oldest Tua Pek Kong Temple in Malaysia is here in Tanjung Tokong Penang. It was built in a fishing village around 1792. From here worship of Tua Pek Kong spread across Southeast Asia.
Between 1865 and 1868 Chung Keng Quee was a major donor to the Sea Pearl Tua Pek Kong Temple. Today the Tua Pek Kong Temple still stands as a beacon of faith and history. It reminds us of the past and the enduring power of community. It shows us the traditions that connect generations. This Tua Pek Kong Temple is more than just a temple.
