Whispers from the past. That’s what Woodlawn Memorial Park in Colma breathes. Woodlawn Memorial Park isn’t just a cemetery. It’s a silent city of stories. Established in 1905 it holds a significant piece of San Francisco’s history.

Originally conceived as the Masonic Burial Ground Woodlawn started with a ceremony in 1904. The Grand Lodge of California laid the cornerstone. It was on a 47-acre site once home to the Seven Mile House. This was a stop on the stagecoach route between San Francisco and San Jose. The park’s entrance is stunning. It features two arches designed by talented architects. The first one was created by T. Paterson Ross using blue granite from Raymond California. Later an additional arch was added along with offices a columbarium mausoleum and chapel.

Woodlawn’s history is richer than you might think. Around 1935 the old Masonic Cemetery in San Francisco closed. The remains of approximately 40000 people were moved to Woodlawn. This was a massive undertaking spanning many years. A memorial pillar marks the relocation of these souls.

Woodlawn Memorial Park holds many notable figures. Cartoonist Alex Anderson creator of Rocky the Flying Squirrel and Bullwinkle rests here. So does Humbert Allen Astredo a Dark Shadows actor. The founder of Guittard Chocolate Company Etienne Guittard is also buried here. Many prominent politicians and historical figures are laid to rest within this peaceful sanctuary. Emperor Norton the self-proclaimed Emperor of the United States was moved here in 1934 from the Masonic Cemetery. Even Josée Sarria a prominent LGBT activist who styled herself as “The Widow Norton” finds her final resting place here.

Woodlawn Memorial Park is more than just graves. It’s a timeline. It’s a testament to lives lived a legacy preserved. It’s a place where the whispers of the past still echo among the headstones. Take a moment to listen to the stories Woodlawn Memorial Park has to tell.
