Woodford Baptist Church is a welcoming place of worship. It has a rich history in the heart of London. Let’s uncover some of its secrets.
Before 1808, non-conformist worshippers met in houses. These meetings occurred throughout the village for almost a century. In 1808, they purchased a property for £100. It was then fitted out for worship.
In 1820, the group wanted a minister. They didn’t want to rely on ministers from local towns. On June 20th, Mr Miller of Oakham preached. This was his first sermon. A special meeting occurred on April 29th, 1822. Those present agreed to form a church. It was named Particular Baptists. The church officially formed on May 22nd, 1822. The first service was preached the next day.
Little is recorded about the building’s origin. The books record the new meeting house opened October 16th, 1823. Woodford Baptist Church has a long history.
Galleries were added in 1855. In the 1880s, the building extended. This included upper and lower school rooms. The chapel officially registered in 1866. It became a place of worship. A year later, it registered for marriages.
Originally, four paraffin heaters heated the chapel. Oil lamps provided light. The heating modernized later. Piped hot water came from a coal boiler. The boiler was under the schoolroom floor. An all-electric system replaced it in the 1960s.
In 1933/34, an organ was purchased. It came from Desborough Baptist Church. It replaced the old harmonium. The large pulpit reduced to its present size. In 1988, the organ replaced again. This one came from Roade Baptist Church. During installation, workers found the baptistery in poor repair. A new baptistery constructed in 1990.
A new vestry was added in 1992. The entrance area and toilets were also new. In 1995, workers removed the side pews. This happened during damp proofing work. They replaced them with chairs.
Burials took place in the churchyard until the late 1800s. The burial ground was full then. Memorial tablets commemorate founder members. These tablets also honor their families. The pulpit bible was provided in memory of former members. So were the communion chairs and table. The new schoolroom windows also served as a memorial.
Attendance numbers have changed over the years. The Woodford Baptist Church has remained open each Sunday. Records show it never closed. This excludes the COVID lockdowns.
Woodford Baptist Church was established shortly after the railway arrived. This was in 1881. A school-chapel opened in 1883. Three years later, a minister settled there. The present main buildings were built in 1895-6. They were built in front of the school-chapel.
Since then, thousands have been part of the church. Church members have included shopkeepers and teachers. Some were professionals and councillors. One was even a Mayor of Redbridge. In the 1940s, two missions opened locally. They later became independent churches. The church partnered with Redbridge in the 1960s and 70s. They built a care home and two sheltered housing units. These housed over 100 people in Wanstead.
Today, Woodford Baptist Church thrives. Its doors remain open. It serves its community. It offers courses on parenting and marriage. They even offer courses on money management. The church also runs the Alpha course. Clubs and activities engage children and young people. Fundraising events support causes. These include breast cancer research.
