Lost in time, the Wolfshügelturm whispers tales of Dresden’s past. The Wolfshügelturm once stood proudly atop Wolfshügel Hill in Dresden’s Albertpark. Designed by city architect Hans Erlwein, the tower replaced a simpler wooden structure in 1911. Imagine ascending the 25-meter reinforced concrete tower, two spiraling staircases winding within. At the top, a copper-domed viewing platform offered panoramic views of the city, the Elbe Valley, and the surrounding heath. The Wolfshügelturm quickly became a beloved landmark, a popular destination for outings and romantic proposals. Sadly, this iconic structure met a tragic end. In May 1945, just days before the Red Army entered Dresden, German troops detonated the tower. They aimed to deny the Soviets a potential observation post. Today, only the tower’s base remains, a silent testament to its former glory. But the story doesn’t end there. A dedicated group formed the “Wiederaufbau Wolfshügelturm” association in 2018. Their goal is to rebuild the Wolfshügelturm, breathing new life into this historic site. Perhaps one day, visitors will once again climb to the summit and enjoy the breathtaking views. The Wolfshügelturm stands as a symbol of Dresden’s resilience, a reminder of the city’s rich history and the enduring spirit of its people.
