Deep within the Wolbecker Tiergarten, an ancient oak stood sentinel. Its gnarled branches reached towards the sky, a testament to centuries of history. This sprawling forest, southeast of Münster, Germany, whispers tales of bygone eras. The Wolbecker Tiergarten isn’t just a collection of trees. It’s a living, breathing chronicle of the region. Originally a hunting ground for the Prince-Bishops of Münster, the name “Tiergarten,” meaning “animal garden,” reflects its past. Imagine the forest teeming with red deer and wild boar, a sportsman’s paradise. The 18th century saw around 100 red deer stags and 500 wild boar roaming these woods. Today, the 288 hectares of the Wolbecker Tiergarten still hold echoes of that era. The forest itself is one of Münsterland’s oldest, its oaks and beeches standing as silent witnesses to the passage of time. The forest floor is a mosaic of life. In the northern reaches, the Angelaue wetlands teem with biodiversity. Keep an eye out for the flash of blue as a kingfisher dives for its meal along the Angelbach stream. A devastating tornado ripped through the southern part of the Wolbecker Tiergarten in July 2010. A 50-hectare section, scarred by the storm, now thrives as a designated wilderness area. Witness the power of nature’s resilience as deadwood becomes a haven for insects and birds. This “Wildnisentwicklungsgebiet,” a wilderness development area, showcases the forest’s ability to heal and regenerate. While walking along the paved paths of the Wolbecker Tiergarten, pause and reflect on the forest’s journey. From a hunting ground of bishops to a protected reserve, this woodland has seen it all. Explore the 6.2 km nature trail with its 16 information points. Discover the “Naturwaldzelle,” a protected area untouched since 1906. The Wolbecker Tiergarten invites you to immerse yourself in its captivating story, where history and nature intertwine.
