In 1927, a unique structure graced the Bremerhaven skyline: the Wohnwasserturm Wulsdorf. It was a testament to ingenuity, a fusion of form and function. This wasn’t just a water tower; it was a home. The Wohnwasserturm Wulsdorf, a striking 33-meter tall reinforced concrete edifice clad in brick, became the first skyscraper on the Unterweser. It was a symbol of progress in a city undergoing rapid transformation. The burgeoning fishing port of Wulsdorf demanded a greater water supply. Simultaneously, Wesermünde, the city that would later become part of Bremerhaven, faced a severe housing shortage. The Wohnwasserturm Wulsdorf addressed both needs with remarkable elegance. Designed by city planner Wilhelm Eduard Kunz and Heinrich Mangel, head of the building department, the tower showcased a blend of architectural styles. Its brick façade echoed the North German Brick Expressionism movement. Its functional design embodied the principles of the Neues Bauen, or New Building, style. The Wohnwasserturm Wulsdorf was a pioneer, one of the first structures in Wesermünde to embrace the modern architectural trends of the 1920s. The tower’s innovative steel-concrete frame allowed for flexible interior design. Walls could be moved or removed, accommodating various layouts. While large office spaces were considered, the pressing housing need led to the creation of 24 two- and three-room apartments. Above the residential floors, tucked away under the roof, were two reinforced concrete tanks. These tanks held a combined capacity of 1500 cubic meters of water, a vital resource for the growing port and its residents. Between 1950 and 1952, additional apartments and a laundry drying area were added to the top floor, further maximizing the tower’s utility. The Wohnwasserturm Wulsdorf remained a vital part of Bremerhaven’s water supply until 1996. Today, this landmark, a protected cultural monument since 1978, still stands proudly in Wulsdorf. It continues to serve as a residence, a unique blend of history and habitation, and a reminder of Bremerhaven’s innovative past.
