Two sturdy pillars reach skyward, adorned with vibrant images and thought-provoking proverbs. This, my friends, is the Wit and Wisdom Sculpture. It’s more than just metal and concrete. It’s a testament to the diverse cultures that enrich the Hillman City neighborhood. The Wit and Wisdom Sculpture isn’t confined to a single location. Its main elements, two striking steel pillars, stand tall at the intersection of Rainier Avenue South and South Orcas Street. Look closely at their bases. You’ll find 24 bronze plaques, each bearing a proverb from a different culture. These proverbs, filled with wit and humor, offer glimpses into the shared human experience. The artist, Stuart Nakamura, envisioned this artwork as a collection of worldly wisdom. He believed these proverbs, passed down through generations, could enrich our lives. Nakamura’s creation extends beyond the pillars. Two concrete gateway pieces, adorned with colorful ceramic tiles, mark other entrances to Hillman City. One stands at Rainier Avenue South and South Lucile Street, the other at Rainier Avenue South and South Mead Street. The Wit and Wisdom Sculpture was a gift to Seattle, facilitated by the SouthEast Effective Development (SEED). Funding came from various sources, including the City of Seattle and the Seattle Foundation. The Wit and Wisdom Sculpture serves as a vibrant reminder of the power of shared knowledge and the beauty of cultural diversity. It invites us to pause, reflect, and appreciate the wisdom found in different corners of the world.
